Preventing Cot Death

Being a parent I understand the real danger of Cot Death (SIDS), and was at a loss when one of my close friends lost her baby when he was 8 months. Since that time I have been researching, promoting and preventing Cot Death.

Is there really an answer to prevening cot death (SIDS)?

Dr. Sprott, OBE, chemist, and forensic scientist of New Zealand says yes! His research and solutions have reduced that nation's cot death rate dramatically and among the 100,000+ parents who have taken his advice, there has not been one reported cot death.

The answer is in the cot itself. Antimony, arsenic, and phosphorus were first introduced into cot mattresses in the early 1950s, and for example, the British cot death rate increased steadily from that time onwards. (In fact the term "SIDS" was coined in 1954 as a result of the marked increase in the number of such deaths.)

What do these chemicals have to do with cot death I hear you ask?

Well, if bacterial/mold get into the mattress which is unavoidable in normal use, it feeds on these chemicals and releases them as a toxic gas. Once a baby sleeps on the mattress, the mold grows exponentially and releases the toxic gas (activated by body heat). If a baby has a fever, and the mold is present, then growth of the mold is greatly increased and hence the release of toxic gas increases and releases them in gaseous form.

The gas disipates quickly, however if inhaled by a baby who is sleeping it acts as a nerve gas and stops heart function resulting in death.

The danger of cot death can be virtually eliminated by ensuring that babies sleep on mattresses and underbedding known to be free from the elements phosphorus, arsenic and antimony. The BabeSafe range of mattress covers complies with this requirement.

All other types of cot mattress must be enclosed in a BabeSafe slip-on mattress cover.

Why does the mattress cover work? Dr. Sprott is a chemist and a plastics specialist. This plastic is called polythene, and MUST be 125 microns thick to prevent gas from escaping. It fits the mattress tightly and has airholes beneath the mattress to allow airflow and prevent moisture buildup that the growth of mold would cause.

BabeSafe mattress covers are available right here at Total Baby.

It is imperative to use the correct bedding on top of a BabeSafe mattress cover as particular types of bedding has also been found to contain the chemicals.

Use a pure cotton (flannelette) underblanket and tuck this in securely.

Then make the bed using sheets and a pure cotton or pure woollen overblanket.

Do not use any of the following as baby bedding:

  • Sheepskin or sheepfleece underlay
  • Moisture-resistant cot mattress protector
  • Any underblanket which is not made of pure cotton
  • Acrylic blanket
  • Any blanket which contains polyester
  • Sleeping bag
  • Duvet
  • BabeSafe covers should be cleaned by wiping with pure soap and water. Do not use chemical bleaches or sterilants.

There has not been one reported cot death on a BabeSafe mattress cover.

So how can you prevent toxic gases reaching your baby.

    1) Measure your mattress including length, width and depth. This will determine the correct size BabeSafe mattress cover you will require.

    2) Order the correct size cover for your mattress right here at Total Baby. If you are unsure of the correct size, please email me your dimensions and I will let you know which cover to order.

    3) Wrap your mattress according to the directions specified in the instructions.

    4) Use only bedding recommended by Dr. Sprott to ensure no offending chemicals are placed over the cover (which would negate its effectiveness!). Linen is also available through Total Baby.

    5) Place your baby to sleep on it's safe mattress and finally get some sleep yourself!
